Take I-93 north through Franconia Notch. Exit and get back on I-93 headed south. Park at the Profile Lake Trail Head parking area. Walk south along the paved bicycle path until even with the southern end of the cliffs. A marked (it wasn't last time we were there) trail heads right uphill through the woods. At the base of the scree is a distinctive boulder called the Little Matterhorn. Hike up the scree to the base of the cliffs. This approach is for the southern end of the cliffs, but you can hike along the base easily enough.
My experience at Cannon is fairly limited, and J and I have decided to keep it that way. Our first climb (the Whitney Gilman Ridge) left us retreating in rain and drizzle. Our second climb (Old Cannon) was even more fun. After a miserable climb (there were a couple nice pitches in the middle), we hiked out in the dark without a trail (or a light). This time though, we got back to the truck just before the rain.
A winter shot of Cannon.
The Whitney-Gilman Ridge (5.7).
A closer shot of the ridge.
J at the belay station after the first long pitch.
J and Dave deciding that it was time to go down.
Not much of a view that day. This is looking toward the Black Dike and Fafnir.
Looking back into the valley as we decended.
